Joan Metcalf
“I’ve always been intrigued with nature’s high drama,” says Oregon artist Joan Metcalf. From the light reflecting off ocean waves to the vivid color of autumn leaves, she brings the wonder of the changing seasons to her dynamic, large-scale scenes. Her choices of medium and technique have evolved over the years. These days, layers of metal leaf lend a literal glow, making her paintings shine with a beauty and elegance all their own. Metcalf has been painting professionally and exhibiting her work for more than 60 years. Amidst 2020’s turbulence, she set a personal goal “to create the most cheerful paintings I can for a better tomorrow.” Metcalf’s artwork is in numerous private and public collections in the Pacific Northwest and around the globe.
